What is the paleolithic diet and what to eat and not eat

The diet of most people today in the “developed” world is very high in carbohydrates. The way the human body obtains energy is to burn fat, which is absorbed whenever you eat food that is high in carbs.

Your body stores a small amount of carbohydrates

The problem is that the body can only store a small amount of carbohydrates so that they are ready for use as a quick energy source (because your body is designed to live in an environment in which you need very few carbohydrates).

Storing carbs as fat

When you get up in the morning and have a coffee with a muffin or some cookies, this fills your reservations for “sugar.” The rest of the carbohydrates you eat are converted into fat that is stored in your body to use it as energy in the future.

Why does our body store fat?

Our ancestors ate only plants and animals (in many ways) to get all the nutrients they needed. Besides eating more sporadically, they did not have a steady supply of food as we have today. This is why humans started to store energy as fat, so we can use it as energy during times of scarcity.

What to eat with the paleo diet

The basis of your diet should be vegetables. Second should be meat, fish and eggs. And finally fruit, nuts, seeds, oils (olive or coconut oil), spices and herbs. While vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices do not add many calories, they should be the main source of carbohydrates you get (the few that you are going to consume) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc.).

Eat lots of vegetables

Nuts, seeds and animal products are calorically dense, and provide low stimulate insulin production and are a perfect source of protein and healthy fats. It may cost you a little but it is important that you focus your diet around vegetables, since we are so used to eating things that are processed, and high in carbohydrates.

Do not follow the example of restaurants that serve small amounts of vegetables as decoration, and help yourself to large portions of them to fill your plate. Enjoy vegetables: raw, stewed, boiled or baked. There can also be delicious creamed vegetables, buy some you’ve never tried it and find out the best recipes.

Where did the eating of meat stem from?

In the paleolithic era, most of the calories in the human diet come from eating all kinds of animals, including insects, amphibians, birds, eggs, fish and shellfish, small mammals and occasionally some larger. Those humans who lived near the Ecuador ate more plants and fewer animals, while those living in colder latitudes had less access to plants so they ate more meat.

What not to eat

Today, the number of toxic agents in our diet is worse than ever. There are toxic manufactured products that are strange to our genes and alter the normal and healthy functioning of the human body. Worst of all are obviously soft drinks, sugars, chemically altered fats and highly processed foods.

Stay away from processed grains

However, there are other meals that are generally accepted as healthy or even being equally energetic “poison” in our diet. These foods are processed grains (corn, wheat, flour and its derivatives, bread, pasta, corn, etc.).

Excessive carbohydrate loading

You read that right, these products are generally unsuitable for human consumption because our digestive system and our genes have not had time to adapt to the protein structure of the grains and excessive carbohydrate loading of all forms of cultivated grains, including integrals.
