Creative ways to burn calories besides cardio

Aerobic exercises are great for burning calories but at times they gets stale and mundane. If you are no longer excited about your workout routine, then it is time to switch things up. Dancing to hip-hop or salsa is great for music lovers seeking to burn the extra calories. Another idea is to jump from the steps of the porch with the kids or join them for a game of hopscotch.

Bike riding

Bike riding is a sustainable form of transportation and it helps you burn calories. Ride your bike to work and favorite places such as the park, coffeehouse, restaurant, friends' houses and outdoor festivals. The number of calories you can burn while on the bike vary, but according to the Mayo Clinic you will need to ride your bike for at least 45 minutes to burn a lot of calories depending on your weight.

Cleaning your house

Housecleaning requires plenty of physical activity and this is a simple way to burn the extra calories. Some calorie-burning tasks include cleaning out the refrigerator, de-cluttering certain rooms in the house, mopping and sweeping, scrubbing the kitchen floor, throwing old items out the garage, moving furniture around, stacking storage bins and cleaning out the closet.

Run around the yard with the kids

A fun way to burn calories is to play with the kids outside. This instills in them the importance of physical activity. One idea is to play tag. In this game, the group choose a person to be "it" and then the group runs around while this person tags the next person, who then becomes "it." The process repeats until everyone stops playing the game.

Walk around the community

Walking is an inexpensive and fun method of burning calories. Don't just walk to your usual places such as the store or bank. You can walk to other places such as the movie theater, ice cream shop, your child's school to pick him up, your favorite restaurants and clubs. Walking can burn up to 300 calories depending on how long you walk, miles you walk and your weight.

Jumping rope

Jumping rope is not just for kids; adults can benefit from this activity for weight loss. Those who jump rope for an hour can burn close to 700 calories but even if you jump rope for 20 to 30 minutes a day, you will still be able to burn adequate calories.

Ball games

Whether it is football or basketball, ball games help you burn plenty of calories. These games also promote closer bonding with family and friends. Ball games build strong muscles and you'll have better flexibility in your body.

Swings and slides

Playing on the swings and slides at the park is another cool way to burn calories. If you are a mom, schedule some playdates with friends who have children and enjoy the swings and slides together. Bring healthy snacks to the playdates.

These methods of burning calories assist with long-term weight loss without feeling as though you are enrolled in a traditional workout program.
