How to stay active outdoors during bad weather

It is that time of year when weather is getting bad. Rain and snow are on our doorsteps, literally in many places, and it is a time for staying inside all day. However, this is also the time for colds and flu. As much as we would like to blame the weather, we all know that staying inside in the stale air does not help us.

You might say that staying inside is for safety reasons. Well, if there is a giant windstorm, lightening, blizzards, flooding, etc., then yes, it would behoove us to stay inside; however, when there is just rain or snow, it does not hurt us to go outside. We just have to be properly prepared to do so. With that said, here are some ways to help in your outdoor excursions.

Dress for the occasion

If it is raining, wear a raincoat or other such waterproof jacket. If it is snowy or even simply cold, layer your clothes and wear winter gear. If you go out in the snow wearing ankle socks and tennis shoes, you are asking for misery. Grab warm socks (multiple pairs, if need be) and boots. Dress for the occasion, and you will be well on your way to being able to better enjoy the outdoors.

Do not underestimate hydration

We usually think of staying hydrated during the hot months, but to remember that it is just as important to drink water in the cold months. Just because it is cold does not mean that you do not need water. Stay hydrated.

Have your house prepared for your return

You are not going to want to go spend time outside in the cold if you know that your house is cold as well. It does not have to be a sauna in your house: it simply has to be comfortable. Besides, when you come from the cold, warm feels like hot. Trust me.

If you have any little ones, you might think that it is bad for them to be out in the elements. This is not so. Up until rather recent times, people brought their children out into all types of weather. You just have to properly prepare them as well.

There are plenty of appropriate clothes and other items for all weather occasions for even babies. Winter suits, tights, rain jackets, hooded strollers (which can be used with blankets), hats, gloves, etc. There is no shortage of supply for fall and winter gear for children and babies. So, bundle them up and get them outdoors as well.

Make it an activity. The bonus is that, if you get them used to being outdoors (and being properly prepared to be outdoors,) they, like you, will have the knowledge of how to enjoy the outdoors in all types of weather and will be able to enjoy it for years to come.
