Why kids shouldn't skip breakfast

We've all heard that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day," but we've usually ignored it. People don't know how much they're missing by not eating breakfast. It helps your body more than you could even imagine, and we need to stop underestimating breakfast's benefits. Whether you're in a hurry or not, there are always alternatives that you can eat without having to fix a full blown meal.

Should everyone eat breakfast?

Yes! It's very important that you eat breakfast every day, even if it's just some eggs and toast. It counts. People think that skipping breakfast will help you lose weight, and sure, it might, but it's very unhealthy to lose weight by skipping meals. You're depriving your body of the vitamins and nutrients it needs in order to maintain your metabolism so you can lose weight in a healthy manner. You should eat breakfast within 2 hours of waking up as it replaces the nutrients that your body has used while you were sleeping; this way, you won't feel groggy or under the weather.

Breakfast also helps you wake up by giving you energy naturally instead of filling your body with unhealthy preservatives and artificial flavors from energy drinks and sugary treats. This also helps you to focus better because eating breakfast keeps you from getting tired during the day due to the lack of needed nutrients in your body. So you'll be able to get through work or finish your schoolwork better and quicker instead of procrastinating because you're tired.

Eating a healthy breakfast can also help with:

  • Brain functions
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Blood sugar

What about the kids?

It's important for kids eat breakfast every day. Parents wonder why their kids don't pay attention in school or why they have trouble focusing and, other than medical conditions which can hinder their learning ability, they don't stop to think if they could be part of the reason. Sure children's cereals taste good, but are they healthy? Most cereals are full of sugar and artificial flavorings and letting your kid eat a lot of sugar for breakfast isn't going to help them to actually learn in school.

Lots of fruits and a hearty breakfast have vitamins and minerals that help with growth and helps them to learn and stay focused in class. A healthy breakfast will also keep your child full until lunch time so they aren't getting cranky during morning classes. Some kids are going to be picky – it comes with growing up – so send them with healthy snacks if they aren't big breakfast eaters.

Fruits are packed full of nutrients and are easily transportable as well as naturally sweetened. When they're filled with sugary foods they can get tired and cranky due to having a sugar rush and then wanting to crash, but eating healthy will improve their mood without the crash. Have your kids eat a healthy breakfast every day and one day they'll thank you for it.
