Your blockbuster summer movie guide

Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" kicked off the summer season with an impressive $145 million opening weekend. Obviously, there is more to come, so here is a look at what and when big movies are opening.

May 12

Mother's Day weekend has "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" debuting. It features Charlie Hunnam, who is known for his role as Jackson 'Jax' Teller in the television series "Sons of Anarchy" and as Raleigh Beckett in the movie "Pacific Rim." It also has been heavily advertised, so it should give "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" some competition this weekend.

May 19

This is a weekend that has two big name movies debuting on the same day.

First, there is the family choice in "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul." This is the fourth movie to be made from the popular children book series by Jeff Kinney.

The other big name movie debuting that weekend is "Alien: Covenant." Expectations are high for fans of the series as Ridley Scott returns to direct this latest installment after directing the original that debuted in 1979.

May 26

This weekend features a very popular pirate as Johnny Depp dons his Jack Sparrow costume one more time in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales." The fifth installment features the return of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. So, anything less than a blockbuster will be disappointing.

Also coming out this weekend is "Baywatch," which stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. The movie is a clear comedy and makes fun of the old staples like a female lifeguard running in slow motion.

June 2

June kicks off with history as the first female-led superhero movie "Wonder Woman" debuts. Gal Gadot reprises the role that first appeared in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice."

June 9

This weekend sees the reboot of "The Mummy" starring Tom Cruise. If you seen the previews, then you know this is a departure from the original and is purely an action movie. It also features Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella and Annabelle Wallis.

June 16

Lightning McQueen returns in "Cars 3" as he sets out to prove himself once again to a new generation of racers.

June 23

Michael Bay returns for the fifth installment of the Transformers franchise with "Transformers: The Last Knight." The series has lost its luster that first brought it to the big screen. Bay has pretty much killed off all the mainstays except Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. At this point fans, including myself, can only hope that the movie flops and reboots with someone like J.J. Abrams, because the franchise has been totally mishandled from the very start.

June 30

The month closes with another third installment of a animated franchise as "Despicible Me 3" debuts. The plot for this one is Gru meets his twin brother Dru that he never knew about.

July 7

This month kicks off with a bang with the premiere of "Spider-Man: Homecoming." This will draw big money as it features Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role of Tony Stark. As fans of the series know all the movies are tied into building up to the "Infinity War" movies.

From here it is pretty much downhill for the rest of the summer.

July 14: "War for the Planet of the Apes"

July 21: "Dunkirk"

July 28: "The Emoji Movie"

If there is any surprise blockbuster it is going to be "The Emoji Movie." Parents are always looking for something to do to keep their kids occupied and with the selection of movies out at that time this is their best option.
